Modern Art – Hilda’s room

For centuries, drawings and paintings were simply an attempt to accurately capture and record a scene. They were thought of in much the same way we think about photographs today. In the second half of the 19th century, the industrial revolution changed society and this was reflected in dramatic changes that visual arts went through. New art styles and movements appeared and disappeared quickly- this was a reflection of the rapid changes in society. Art in this period is known as Modern Art. The Sixth class project group have been busy researching some of the major Art movements from this time (Impressionism, Fauvism, Art Nouveau & Deco, Surrealism and Pop Art) and will present their projects to their class in the coming weeks.

Spikeball

On the 31^st of January 2012 we attended a tournament to play an excellent game called Spikeball. We have been training and learning about the sport for weeks in preparation for the tournament. It took place in Athy College.

The rules of the game are simple. Its similar to volleyball therefore it would take place on a volleyball court. There are 6 on the team but only four on the court. The team rotates every successful 3 serves. The way you serve can be over arm or under arm and the ball must go over the net. The opposing team have to volley it up for a teammate to catch and then he\she throws the ball to another teammate who must slam it over the net. You have to make three passes before you slam it down on the opposing teams side.

The tournament was a fantastic one. There was a boys team and a mixed team. 12 students from 5^th and 6^th class went to the tournament. Ciarán, Niamh, Brandon, Patrick, Jamie, Ben, Sadhbh, Jack and Nosa went from 5^th class. From 6^th Tumise, Eamonn and Eoin took part.

Reminder: Early finishes next week

School will finish at 1.55pm on Tuesday and Wednesday (31st January & 1st February) next week to facilitate some of the progress meetings which are taking place.

Infant classes will finish at the normal time of 1.10pm.

The After School Facility will operate until 1.55pm and school buses will depart at 1.55pm.

Progress Meetings

Progress Meetings will take place during the coming weeks. Teachers will inform individual parents /guardians of their own specific time, day and date.

Due to Department regulations, progress meetings must take place outside school hours. School will close to pupils (1st to 6th class) on Tuesday 31st January and Wednesday 1st February at 1.55pm in order to facilitate some of these meetings.

Please be advised that after school care will finish at 1.55pm and the buses will also be departing school fifteen minutes early on these dates.

We will endeavour to accommodate all parents/guardians with times that suit both parties.

Swimming

5th and 6th class will not be going swimming in January as the pool is not available but will resume again in February. (Date to be confirmed)

Another great week in 6th Class. We completed all of our decorations for the Christmas Fair, we had an energy workshop and we completed Winter scenes in art using Oil pastels and chalk. Please take a look at our energy workshop pictures in our last post.

We are all very excited to be on our Christmas holidays today and we would like to wish eveybody a Happy Christmas and a Wonderful New Year.

Energy Workshop in 6th

Today in 6th class we had a energy workshop – We learnt all about how energy can be and should be conserved. We used a bike to create energy to blend orange juice, bananas and peaches together to form a delicious smoothie! Then we all got to drink it! The pictures show you how we cycled the bike to blend the fruit!!

Ice skating for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class

We are delighted to inform you that NETNS children have been invited to go ice skating at “Newbridge on Ice”. The organisers at Newbridge on Ice have invited the children from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class to take part in a session free of charge on Wednesday 14th December.

Protective gear and helmets will be provided by the organisers for all children but it is recommended that children wear warm clothes and gloves.

The skating session is free; however, there will be a small charge for the bus which is €1.50 per child.

Please return the consent form which was given to your child’s teacher tomorrow.

6th Class Photographs

Vincent McNamara (photographer) will be in school tomorrow (Tuesday) to collect order forms for the class photographs. Any orders made after that date should be returned directly to him at the address shown on the form provided.
