Making Computer Games!

Everyone has been really busy in our after school club looking at Scratch Programming. In groups of 2/3, children made versions of the classic game ‘Pong’. I’ve been amazed at how everyone has used teamwork and computer skills to help make their games. You can play them below!

Use the mouse (or keyboard on Shane and Eomann’s) to move the bat and stop the ball hitting the floor!

6th class news

A couple of weeks ago we went on a day trip to the Curragh Racecourse and we learned lots of interesting facts. Afterwards we entered into a competition with many other schools and Aine in our class was chosen. We were all so happy for her as we knew she had put so much time and effort into her essay. Aine went to a presentation at the Curragh Racecourse on Monday where she was presented with her prize, it was viewed by everybody on the big screen.

Well done Aine!

This week we only had a three day week, but we were still busy. We have been practising our basketball and football skills in PE .. we are waiting for a dry day to go down to the Curragh to play rounders. In art, Maeve came in today help us to put the finishing touches on our clay discs which we will be putting in the garden for everybody to see.

It wont be long until we are off on our school tour to the Gaeltacht in Donegal,

6th Class update

Hi Everybody,

Another busy week this week in 6th Class …

This week was our second session completing ceramics in art. A lady called Maeve is coming into our class every week for five weeks to create lots of memories for us to have in our school garden when we leave the school in June. We have been busy recreating our memories through clay, on our first week Maeve helped us to design our memories – she took them away and fired them in her kiln. Then she brought them back to us this week and we painted and glazed them – next week they will be ready to hang on a Totem Pole to represent our class in the garden. We are getting ready to make lots of brilliant pieces for all to see in the garden – we hope that you can come to see them when we have them completed.

On Thursday the rain stopped and we eventually got to completed our 5K walk …at 12.40 we set off on our walk. We walked at a very fast pace some of us even ran at parts. We really enjoyed this walk as we were so grateful that so many children in 3rd,4th and 5th help to fundraise for our walk. We are still astounded by their generosity. When we got back from our long walk the PA gave us lots of treats – they were such an incentive while we were walking And we really really enjoyed them. As did 5th.

We are looking forward to coming back to school after our long weekend to do more fun activities

Bird Table Project-Hilda’s Room

Seán and Daniel from Sixth Class have undertaken a project for our school garden. They will be working on sanding, varnishing and reassembling an old bird table that we received. We will keep you updated on how our restoration work progresses and will post some before and after photos of our bird table in the coming weeks!

5k Walk

5th and 6th Class have postponed their 5k fundraising walk until Tuesday 1st of May due to weather conditions.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has helped us to fundraise for our trip to the Gaeltacht.

Sixth Class would like to thank everybody who has been helping us to fundraise for our trip to the Gaeltacht so far.

We are completing a 5k walk with 5th this Friday and we are really looking forward to this… We are still fundraising but we would like to thank 3rd, 4th and 5th for helping us to reduce the cost of our trip to the Gaeltacht. So its never too late to sponsor us…!

We will let you know on Friday how our walk went and how much we managed to fundraise..

Endangered Species – Hilda’s room

The Fifth and Sixth class project groups have begun working on projects based on “Endangered Species” today. Many species throughout the world are decreasing in population and are threatened with extinction. Though numerous environmental groups around the world fight for their survival, ongoing changes in the environment of these animals makes the job of protecting many species a difficult one. We are looking forward to researching and presenting our projects in the coming weeks.

Garden Update

Its been another busy week and lots has been happening in the garden before the holidays!

As 5th Class have been looking at The Great Famine in class, they planted some potatoes. We discussed where the potato came from and why people relied on it as a crop.

5th, 6th and 3rd class children all helped to plant some runner beans, carrots and leeks, whilst others also helped to build a new raised bed.

I was very impressed by the teamwork everyone showed to help construct the raised bed and the ‘mini-greenhouse’ which sits on top of it to keep the planted warm and safe. We cannot wait to plant some vegetables in the bed after the holidays

Cross Country

Well done to all the children who represented NETNS at the Cumann na mBunscoil Cross country competition on Thursday the 29th of March. We had a great time over at the Hawkfield grounds and I’m very proud to inform you that each one of our 22 athletes completed the course. Áine, who was running on the girls team, ran a fantastic race and came away with a medal. Congratulations to all the children who took part and thank you to all the parents who helped out with lifts on the day.
