Well done to all the boys and girls who received their MS Readathon thank you gifts today.

The boys and girls in Fifth Class who took part in the Readathon will receive their prizes on Monday.

This week we have been learning all about where our food comes from. We were surprised to see how many things use milk; yoghurt, ice-cream, chocolate, cheese, butter and even some breads and cakes! We learned about how we get milk from some herds and beef from others. As well as getting milk from cows we can get milk from sheep and goats which can be used to make cheese too. We also learned about growing cereals like wheat, oats and barley. Can you think of anything you like to eat that comes from a farm?

The best part of learning about the food we grow in Ireland was the tasting! The children brought in examples of food we can grow here, such as carrots, potatoes, apples, parsnips as well as some herbs. We tasted chives and were surprised that we could eat the flower as well as the leaf. We know we can only eat certain flowers so we need to check first! We also tried some mint and Irish strawberries. We crunched through some lovely Irish carrots as well – Healthy snacks that are all grown in Ireland; yummy!

This week we’ve been looking at where we live and where our families are from. We had great fun finding out where Ireland is using our map of the world. We then talked about where we were born and where our families were from and where they live.

In Art over the last two weeks we have been working with clay. We made clay fish with tails, fins, eyes and a big open mouth. When the clay dried we painted our fish using four bright colours and our own designs. In Science we talked about ways we can recycle and the different types of material that is recyclable. In maths we had great fun learning about money and using coins all the way up to 20c.

Dear Parents/Guardians

I would like to give you some background information about the CD that 5th class will be launching in the coming weeks.

For the past four years KCEB (Kildare County Enterprise Board) has provided funding for primary schools for a business and media education course. On behalf of Kildare County Enterprise Board, Vita Studios offered our school the funding for this media project. All additional staff and learning materials were provided under the funding and profits made from the project are returned to the school

We at NETNS accepted and fifth class were chosen as the class who would set up the business. Firstly we set out our business plan, we named our company ‘NETNS Music Makers’ and we received our certificate of incorporation.

We then allocated different jobs to the children in the class in the areas of sales and marketing, IT department and Finance.

The children in 5th class then worked with all of the other classes in the school to learn the song chosen for their class and prepare for recording.

Vita recording studios then came and set up in the fifth class classroom and all of the classes had their turn to record their song in our very own studio.

We are now in the final stages of our business plan and we are currently collecting orders for the CD and preparing for our CD launch. We will be selling our CD for €10 and it costs €4 to make. This project then doubles as a fund raiser for the school as the €6 profit will be given to the school.

5th class have done a fantastic job setting up and running this company and will continue to work hard in the coming weeks to get the copies of the CDs out to our customers and preparing for the launch. We will be in touch early next week about the launch date and times.

Amazing Lego Sculptures

Sean Kenney is a full-time LEGO artist. He uses LEGO toys to build anything and everything you can imagine! He has made Polar bears and football stadiums out of Lego!

Fun facts

• Sean has over 1.5 million LEGO pieces.

• The biggest LEGO sculpture Sean ever made was a polar bear, using 95,000 pieces!

• He once built a 12-foot bridge on live TV in 2 hours.

• His favorite piece is the “1×1 headlight brick”. (You can use it three ways!)

• Sean tells people he is really only 12 years old. (But his bald spot is starting to give

him away.)
