What a busy week we’ve had!! Check out some of the great things we got up to this week!!

In Gaeilge this week we have been learning about the weather and sneachta (snow)!! We learned lots of new words such as “fear sneachta”, “liathróidí sneachta”, “an ghrian”, “uachtar reoite”, fear an phoist”, “lámhainní, “scairf”, “hata”, “Robín”, and “ag scátáil”!!! We also played a listening game on the whiteboard to practise our words. It was so much fun!

In Phonics, there are exciting times ahead! We have finished Set 4 now and on Monday we will be starting our brand new Set 5!! We can’t wait to learn lots more new sounds so that we can read lots more new words!!

In Maths we are working hard on number 3 and we love our rhyme to help us remember how to write it!

In History this week we looked at a Traditional Irish Legend about St. Brigid. Some people celebrate St. Brigid’s Day on February 1st which as we know is also the 1st day of spring! We read an interesting story about St. Brigid’s Cloak. Here is a link for you to read it too!

Finally, in Art today we worked on our Easter Egg designs. We had a visitor from Bank of Ireland a few weeks ago and she told us how her office looked so bare. She asked us to design Easter Egg pictures that she could hang in her office. They look great and we are sure she will love them when she comes to collect them!

Students from both Junior Infant classes learned the poem ‘Roly Poly.’ Today, after lots of preparing we went to the recording studio to record the rhyme! You can listen to them below!

Rowan, Tom, Emhin and Cillian were first to try it out. On the second recording you can hear Eleanor, Taylor, Daniel and Alexandar. It was great fun. We hope to visit and do more recording soon!

Also this week groups of Junior Infants have been doing some extra work with their handwriting. We’ve been practicing some tricky letters and learning little rhymes to help us remember how to write them.

These are the letters we’ve revised over the past two weeks:

c – Start at the top, come round, and stop!

a – Start as if it was c for cat, come back up like an acrobat, down to the ground, and flick.

o – Start as if it was c for cat, but make an orange, just like that!

d – Start as if it was c for cat, come back round like an acrobat, now climb up the dinosaur neck, slide back down to his foot and flick.

Finally, a little while ago James from Senior Infants told us about his trip to the zoo. He wrote all about it and this week he typed his news on the computer. It was his first time typing on the computer in school and he did such a wonderful job:

Little Miss Muffet and Jack and Jill came to visit our classrooms this week! We had a great time sequencing their stories and putting actions to the rhymes.

We learnt about Little Robin Redbreast. He has brown feathers and a red tummy. We made fantastic pictures of it! Well done everyone!

A very special thank you to everyone who tried extra hard with their homework this week. It was wonderful to see the children so excited!

Then using some felt paper the groups worked together to make a picture of the Incy wincy Spider and his journey to the top of the water spout.

Did you know the story of the Incy Wincy Spider? We read it together this week. He had a very busy day on the farm. He was thrown and bounced from animal to animal until finally he made his way home to his Mammy and their web.

His journey, along with the lovely felt picture are also on display outside Siobhán’s classroom for all to see.

In Gaeilge we have been playing a cool game called “Deireann Ó Grádaigh” which is like “Simon Says”. We have been following lots of directions in the game such as, “Deireann Ó Grádaigh bígí ag rith”, Deireann Ó Grádaigh bígí ag léim”, Deireann Ó Grádaigh bígí ag caoineadh, Deireann Ó Grádaigh bígí ag ithe”, Deireann Ó Grádaigh bígí ag ól. We also followed funny ones such as “Deireann Ó Grádaigh bígí ina luí”, where we have to find a space on the floor and lie down!!! We had so much fun!!

In our Maths we have been working on the number “2″. We are excellent at writing it now using our ryhme, “Number 2 goes right around, then draw a line across the ground”. Junior Infants have even been teaching this to people at home!!

In our Jolly Phonics we learned two brand new sounds this week, “ai” and “j”. We know lots of words that have these sounds in them!

In Geography we have been Weather Watchers all week. Each day we have recorded what the weather is like by drawing different pictures. We’ve had lots of different weather this week!! Can you believe that it has been rainy, cloudy, sunny, foggy, windy and frosty all in the one week!!!

On Thursday we were very lucky to have a special visitor to help us in the Halla Glas. Karen came to work on gymnastics with us and it was brilliant. We took part in relays first to warm up where we practised how to do a “gymnastics salute”. After this we all got a turn to do a tumble on the floor mats. Everybody worked very hard and tried their very best. Karen is going to be with us again next week and we are very excited already!!

Due to Department regulations, progress meetings must take place outside school hours. School will close to pupils (1st to 6th class) on Tuesday 31st January and Wednesday 1st February at 1.55pm in order to facilitate some of these meetings.

Please be advised that after school care will finish at 1.55pm and the buses will also be departing school fifteen minutes early on these dates.

We will endeavour to accommodate all parents/guardians with times that suit both parties.
