Sacra and Orla

Some boys and girls from Junior infants have been showing me what super writing they can do. We revised the formation of some tricky letters like ‘g’ and ‘q’ and then we wrote words that contain these tricky letters. Once we remembered that to form these letters we start with a ‘curling c’, they were easy to write.

Other students from Junior Infants have been learning about rhyming sounds and rhyming words. At first we made silly rhyming words that didn’t make sense but sounded funny! Then we tried to think of real words than rhyme with other words. We learned that to make rhyming words we swap the initial sound in a word with a different sound – we leave the ending the same. We played a game on the computer where we had to match rhyming words. Follow this link and you can play too!

Meanwhile Senior Infants have been working very hard as well. They have also been practising their writing. Groups from Michael and Karen’s class had to unjumble a muddled up sentence. Then they wrote it in the correct order. They were very careful to remember their capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

Others have been doing some extra work on their reading. It’s great to see what huge improvements can be made when children read their reading every night.

Wow!! What a busy week we’ve had in Junior Infants!!

In Geography we learned some very interesting facts! Did you know that……

• The sun is the biggest star in our Solar System!
• It is the only star that we can see in the sky during the day!
• It is 100 times bigger than Earth!
• We could not live on the planet Mercury as it is too hot because it is so close to the sun!
• The Earth moves around the sun and it takes one whole year for us to travel all the way around the sun!
• The Moon travels around Earth and it takes 28 days for it to go all the around. That’s nearly a whole month!
• The Earth spins all the time but we can’t feel it!
• The side of the Earth that is facing the sun will have day time while the other side that isn’t facing the sun will have night time!

We are delighted to announce that Junior Infants will be going on their School Tour to the “Let’s Go Camp” in Kilcullen on Friday 22^nd June 2012.

Let’s Go will provide the children with an opportunity to take part in lots of new and exciting activities so we are looking forward to a fun filled day.

The total cost of the tour including transport is €28.00.

The children will need comfortable clothes and runners and a packed lunch with plenty of non-fizzy drinks. Please note that children will require weather appropriate clothing. If needs be sun cream should be applied at home in the morning of the tour.

Please complete the consent form below and return to us with the money in an envelope with your child’s name on it before Friday 8^th June 2012.

It was very sad because on the Titanic’s maiden voyage it hit an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the ocean. We looked at pictures of the ship at the bottom of the ocean. It looks very dirty down there!!

On Wednesday 21^st two producers came into 5^th class and told them they would like to make a cd with them. They told us that they wanted 5^th class to hold a competition, for the cover and the inside of the cd.

There will be a competition for the inside of the cd cover for junior, senior, 1^st and 2^nd. There will also be a competition for the outside cover of the cd for 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th and 6^th class.

There cannot be any writing or text on the picture and you must include your name on the back of the image.

5^th class will choose the best 10 for the inside and for the outside and the company will pick the best one for the inside and for the outside.

You will have plenty of time to draw over the Easter holidays

Just a quick reminder to please remember to protect your child from the effects of the sun:

- Encourage him/her to wear a sunhat, especially if they have very short hair or burn easily.

- Put on the sunscreen before school.

- Make sure your child has enough drinks to last the day. If they have a water bottle, it can be refilled from the tap in the classroom. While drinks are not permitted on yard, the children are allowed to drink water at any other time during the day.

Hopefully this good weather will continue! Enjoy!

In Maths we were working on capacity. We looked at items that were full and items that were empty. The Bears had a great time during their picnic drinking their full glasses of juice.

On Thursday we went for a nature walk and found ourselves drawn towards the wooded area!! We spotted lots of daffodils and new buds on the trees as it is Spring time. We decided to make daffodils during art time, which we will finish next week! Looking forward to seeing the finished product!
