Hi everyone!! Wow!! What a busy week we've had in Junior Infants!! In Geography we learned some very interesting facts! Did you know that...... The sun is the biggest star in our Solar System! It is the only star that we can see in the sky during the day! It is 100 times bigger than Earth! We could not live on the planet Mercury as it is too hot because it is so close to the sun! The Earth moves around the sun and it takes one whole year for us to travel all the way around the … [Read more...]

Hannah’s new website header!

Thank you for all the superb entries for the header competition. It was really tough to choose between all of the great designs. After much discussion, we decided that Hannah Dowling's (4th Class) design really captured the theme of gardening. We particularly liked how it showed children working together and enjoying the outdoors. Hannah also helped me add writing to the design and upload it to the website. Well done! … [Read more...]

Forces

This week in science we have been learning about forces. A force can be a twist, a pull, a push, a catch, a stretch or a squeeze. We can't see a force but we can see the effects of force. A force can make an object speed up, slow down, change direction or change shape. We designed and made vehicles to put what we learned about forces into action. … [Read more...]
Gardeners and playwrights!
This week we planted up herbs, salad leaves and tomatoes. The herb we are growing is basil, and the salad leaves are cress. We sowed the seeds on Thursday and we will have to wait two weeks (10-14 days) for them to germinate. We carried out a quick survey to see which we think will germinate first - most people think basil will be first, then tomato and then the cress. We'll have to wait and see! In other news - we are at the planning stages of writing a play. We are working in … [Read more...]
The Titanic in Junior Infants
This week we learnt some interesting things about the Titanic. The Titanic was built 100 years ago in Belfast. The Titanic was a really big ship with lots of different cabins for the different types of people on board. We looked at a cabin that a person with lots of money could stay in. We also looked at a cabin that a poor person could stay in. We noticed there was a big difference between the cabins! It was very sad because on the Titanic's maiden voyage it hit an iceberg and sank to the … [Read more...]
Egyptians
In Michael’s class this week we have been learning about Egyptians. We read about a king called Tutankahmun. Kings in Egypt were called Pharaoh’s and Tutankahmun became a Pharaoh when he was only nine years old. We also learned about old Egyptian writing called hieroglyphics and we wrote our names using the hieroglyphic alphabet. The alphabet is made up of pictures instead of letters so our names look very different!!! … [Read more...]
Endangered Species – Hilda’s room
The Fifth and Sixth class project groups have begun working on projects based on “Endangered Species” today. Many species throughout the world are decreasing in population and are threatened with extinction. Though numerous environmental groups around the world fight for their survival, ongoing changes in the environment of these animals makes the job of protecting many species a difficult one. We are looking forward to researching and presenting our projects in the coming weeks. … [Read more...]
