This week we’ve been looking at where we live and where our families are from. We had great fun finding out where Ireland is using our map of the world. We then talked about where we were born and where our families were from and where they live.

Well done to boys and girls form 2^nd and 3^rd class who have been working very hard this week making their own comic.

Ethan, Samantha and Malak from 3^rd class read the story ‘Hatch Egg Hatch’ and decided to make their own comic strip based on the story. First we divided the story into six parts. Each part would be a scene in the comic. Next the children decided how they would tell their story. They could choose to add speech bubbles, thought bubbles and narrator boxes to help tell the story.

At the moment they are putting the finishing touches to their comics to show them to their class next week.

Meanwhile, Orla, Marc and Mia from 2^nd class also worked on a comic strip this week. Together they choose characters, location, plot and a beginning, middle and end for their comic. They drew a rough draft of their comic and then made it on the following website where you can go to make your own comic too!

Bird Table Project-Hilda’s Room

Seán and Daniel from Sixth Class have undertaken a project for our school garden. They will be working on sanding, varnishing and reassembling an old bird table that we received. We will keep you updated on how our restoration work progresses and will post some before and after photos of our bird table in the coming weeks!

Days and Months

This week in my room we’ve been looking at days of the week and months of the year. We had some great fun putting the days in order and talking about all of the different activities we do on different days. We learned the name of the days we spend in school and the days of the weekend.

We talked about today, tomorrow and yesterday and some of us learnt about the past, present and future. We sorted sentences into different group depending on what tense they were.

We learned about the different months of the year and talked about when our birthdays our.

Siobhán’s Room

We’ve been very busy in Siobhán’s room this week.

Some boys and girls from Junior infants have been showing me what super writing they can do. We revised the formation of some tricky letters like ‘g’ and ‘q’ and then we wrote words that contain these tricky letters. Once we remembered that to form these letters we start with a ‘curling c’, they were easy to write.

Other students from Junior Infants have been learning about rhyming sounds and rhyming words. At first we made silly rhyming words that didn’t make sense but sounded funny! Then we tried to think of real words than rhyme with other words. We learned that to make rhyming words we swap the initial sound in a word with a different sound – we leave the ending the same. We played a game on the computer where we had to match rhyming words. Follow this link and you can play too!

Meanwhile Senior Infants have been working very hard as well. They have also been practising their writing. Groups from Michael and Karen’s class had to unjumble a muddled up sentence. Then they wrote it in the correct order. They were very careful to remember their capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

Others have been doing some extra work on their reading. It’s great to see what huge improvements can be made when children read their reading every night.

Endangered Species – Hilda’s room

The Fifth and Sixth class project groups have begun working on projects based on “Endangered Species” today. Many species throughout the world are decreasing in population and are threatened with extinction. Though numerous environmental groups around the world fight for their survival, ongoing changes in the environment of these animals makes the job of protecting many species a difficult one. We are looking forward to researching and presenting our projects in the coming weeks.
