The best part of learning about the food we grow in Ireland was the tasting!  The children brought in examples of food we can grow here, such as carrots, potatoes, apples, parsnips as well as some herbs.  We tasted chives and were surprised that we could eat the flower as well as the leaf.  We know we can only eat certain flowers so we need to check first!  We also tried some mint and Irish strawberries.  We crunched through some lovely Irish carrots as well –   Healthy snacks that are all grown in Ireland; yummy!

In Art the children worked in pairs to create their own farm pictures using lots of different materials including cotton wool, construction sticks and crepe paper – fantastic work everyone.

This week in Gaeilge we were at the shops and we bought lots of things and put them in our bag, eg. “Chuaigh mé go dtí an siopa agus cheannaigh mé arán, im, bainne, cairéad, tae, seacláid…”

In Maths we have been learning all about money, in particular, the coppers.  We already knew that we use the Euro in Ireland, but we found out that any coins minted here have a harp on the back of them.  We became shopkeepers and customers again today when we used our coppers to buy things that cost 10 cent or less.  We did our best to give the correct change!

In music, we listened to a lovely story called Peter and the Wolf – each character was an instrument of the orchestra and we heard instruments from the different families – Strings, Wind – woodwind and brass, and Percussion.

Some boys and girls from Junior infants have been showing me what super writing they can do. We revised the formation of some tricky letters like ‘g’ and ‘q’ and then we wrote words that contain these tricky letters. Once we remembered that to form these letters we start with a ‘curling c’, they were easy to write.

Other students from Junior Infants have been learning about rhyming sounds and rhyming words. At first we made silly rhyming words that didn’t make sense but sounded funny! Then we tried to think of real words than rhyme with other words. We learned that to make rhyming words we swap the initial sound in a word with a different sound – we leave the ending the same. We played a game on the computer where we had to match rhyming words. Follow this link and you can play too!

Meanwhile Senior Infants have been working very hard as well. They have also been practising their writing. Groups from Michael and Karen’s class had to unjumble a muddled up sentence. Then they wrote it in the correct order. They were very careful to remember their capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

Others have been doing some extra work on their reading. It’s great to see what huge improvements can be made when children read their reading every night.

In other news – we are at the planning stages of writing a play.  We are working in groups and are discussing titles, characters and scripts.  We were so delighted with how our books turned out that we are sure our plays will be just as good – if not better – wow!
