It gives us great pleasure to announce that Mark, Leon and Damian from 4th class have won 1st prize in the European Day of Languages Video Clip competition! It is fantastic news for the boys, who put in considerable effort into planning, filming and acting in the video.

The jury felt that their video ‘Goal! Scorio! Tor! Cúl’ promoted language learning in a positive and fun way. They also noted the teamwork, commitment and dedication that the boys showed to complete the project. You can watch the video below.

As recognition of their achievement, the boys and the school were awarded €300 worth of National Book Tokens! This prize has been shared between the boys themselves, 4th class (who will now be able to buy some fantastic new books) and the support staff of the school, who will be able to purchase some new resources. Well done boys!

San Francisco, New York, Boston and more

By Ríona and Cian

Our class have been busy over the past three weeks learning all about the history of the USA. We learned about the American Revolution and Civil War. We researched some of the Presidents of America and watched DVD clips about their lives and achievements. Did you know that George Washington was the only president who did not live in the White House? The reason being that he built the White House!

Next, we toured around the States. Bobby did a project on Tennessee, Mel on Florida and Cian on Seattle. Other class members did Powerpoint presentations on famous cities such as San Francisco,New York and Las Vegas. Did you know that the average amount of wedding in Las Vegas is 315 a day?!

President Barack Obama’s visit last Monday was a historical day for our country. In creative writing we imagined that we worked for President Obama and wrote about a day in our life with some very interesting stories!! Finally to finish off our America work, the class are doing projects which we will present this Monday on the most famous Irish American family of them all- The Kennedys. The projects are taking lots of different viewpoints of The Kennedys. Some are basing their projects on JFK, others are fascinated by Jackie O and her sense of style and more are researching Eunice Kennedy Shriver and how she helped to set up the Special Olympics.

This week in fifth class we have being finding out all about World War 2. We have been researching why it started, what countries were involved and the outcomes of the war. We are currently working hard on our WW2 projects. As we were all interested in different areas of the war, we selected different titles for our projects, such as War Children, Evacuation, Hitler’s Life, Battlefields,British Royal Navy. We aim to finish the projects next week and hopefully will be able to share some of the information with others in the school.
We would also like to recommend a website that we used to gather some of our information;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/world_war2/

Take some time to check it out.

Junior Infants were busy gardeners today planting sunflower and sweet pea seeds.

Firstly each of us put some compost into a yoghurt pot. Then we made a hole in the middle of the compost and popped in our seeds. Next, we covered over the seed with compost. We also know that plants need water to grow, so we watered them.

We can’t wait to take care of our plants over the coming weeks and watch them grow into beautiful flowers. Keep an eye on the website for updates and pictures of our flowers!

Have a lovely weekend!!

GameFudge.com is one of many free online game websites that are available on the Internet and this website has been used by children in the school. This website primarily contains quite harmless games but we have been informed that there are also a number of games that are totally unsuitable for children. These other games are advertised as entertainment for adults wishing to pass the time at work and some of these games are very violent or contain other inappropriate content. Although we have a strict filtering system via the school broadband network, no filter is 100% effective and adult vigilance is required at all times to prevent access to unsuitable games and websites online.

We want to let all parents know that some of these harmless looking games websites contain inappropriate games and that none of these websites are approved by the school. We are currently compiling a list of links to safe games and websites. If you would like to suggest any websites or games please email us.

This week has been a very busy week in Sixth Class. In English we’ve started reading our class novel “Benny and Omar”. It’s the story of Benny, a young boy from Wexford who moves with his family to Tunisia. The move is very traumatic for this hurling-mad youngster. He doesn’t get on especially well with his brother and he cannot come to terms with the enlightened culture of his school. He forms a friendship with a resourceful street urchin, Omar, and becomes ever more involved in his life. They communicate in telly-speak and gradually Benny discovers the tragedy that has ripped Omar’s family apart.
In Art, we’ve been having lots of fun designing and making bags from various fabrics and textiles. Some class members have also presented their powerpoints on Asian countries and have learned lots of interesting facts from these for e.g.
Did you know that……
Ice-cream was invented in China around 2000BC when the Chinese packed a soft milk and rice mixture
in the snow
Red is considered a lucky colour in China. At one time wedding dresses were red. New Year’s banners, clothing, and lucky money envelopes are still red.
India’s population is one billion (one thousand million), making it the second most populous country after China.
The martial art ‘Tae kwon do’ originated in Korea

To go along with our projects, Hilda showed us some fascinating photos from her trip to South East Asia,we loved the pictures of the long neck tribes who live near Chang Mai in Thailand.

That’s all for now!
Rachel White
