Some people were so brilliant that they brought in more than enough money to raise for the 4 kids 2 live charity in Kenya. We raised an amazing amount of money in total: 775.44 euro!!!! So thanks to all the people who helped out today, we made the lives of orphans in Kenya a lot better!

Thank you very, very much from Deniz, Darcy and Ciaran

This week in 4th class we had a serious and heated debate about the future of our country. Half of our class took on the role of Michael Collins and the pro-treaty side. The other half of the class took on the role of Eamon DeValera and the anti-treaty side.

Once the facts had been dicussed in class….both sides were given time to prepare their arguements for their proposal. Then came the actual debate. We all dressed up in our best 1920s clothing making use of Dad’s jacket, Mam’s coat, etc. Some of us even had tweed hats. When the debate started, it was quite obvious that it was going to be a close one. Both sides made some fantastic arguements and in the end we had to bring in some 6th class to adjudicate the debate and produce a result.

In the end the Collins pro-treaty side won the debate but this was not due to lack of effort by DeValera and the anti-treaty group. Interesting how history often repeats itself!!!

This week we have been learning about how to care for our envirnoment.

We have been talking all about the three R’s!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — Three great ways YOU can get rid of litter and care for your environment!

Waste, and how we choose to handle it, affects our world’s environment—that’s YOUR environment….think about your school, your home and your local town! The environment is everything around you including the air, water, land, plants, and man-made things. We know that you need a healthy environment for your own health and happiness, so we have been learning why caring for your environment is so important to YOU and everyone else. The waste we create has to be carefully controlled to be sure that it does not harm your environment and your health.

This picture is an idea of how a city would look in 2025 if we never recycled. As you can imagine the place would be overflowing with rubbish! Think of the smell alone. Anyway our picture isn’t quite finished so if you could bring in some wrappers or small piece of rubbish to add to our picture that would be great. Nothing smelly so we don’t pollute our classroom environment. This way we can create awareness of recycling as well as reusing our litter!

School tour to the gaeltacht. Also this week in maths we have been learning number sentences. On Wednesday we played dodge ball in PE and we all had great fun!

This week we have been reading a book called Four Kids, Three Cats, Two Cows, One Witch (maybe) by Siobhán Parkinson. The book is about 4 kids that go and explore an island but one of the children thinks there is a witch on the island and he is afraid that they will run into her!!!.

On Tuesday we presented our Titanic’s project and they were all great. On Friday we started to plan out our CD launch.

We came up with loads of ideas that were really cool. Some of the things we invented were spinning baskets, a spoon fan, light-up glasses, book alarms, book lights, glasses with shades, desk buzzers and light-up hairbands. The things we used to make these amazing inventions were electrical wires, bulbs, buzzers, batteries, selotape, paperclips, thumb tacs and lollipop sticks. Next week we will be presenting our projects to Eimear. We have been working really hard making posters and preparing our presentations and it promises to be an eventful day. David is doing really cool stuff with us about electricity and we are having so much fun!!!

This week we learned about Fairtrade. We looked at Anna’s shop and learned about a different type of product she sells….Fairtrade products. We learned that Fairtrade ensures workers in the developing world receive a fair price for the work they do! Fairtrade enables them to work in safe environments and allows them to make plans for the future! You can get products such as bananas, cocoa, coffee and cotton with the Fairtrade certificate. We made some beautiful posters persuading people to buy Fairtrade. Some of the children brought in more information on Fairtrade and I can’t wait until we delve into it next week. However here are some interesting facts about Fairtrade to tie you over!

Fairtrade pays an extra bonus called a social premium. This is to allow investment in community development such as clean water, health care and education.

• Long term contracts permit planning and development.

• Advance payments and credit facilities help to sustain farmers during difficult times of the year.

• No child or forced labour.

• A greater respect for the environment, encouraging sustainable development.

• Minimum health and safety standards including regulation on the use of pesticides

It is called B.T.S. (Born to sing) Superstars, the name was picked by one of the students in 5th class. All of the classes came to 5th class to record their songs. The songs are Summer Time, Colours, Ugly Alien, Every day, Angles, We are the Kids, Superstars and Bright star. We used lots of technical equipment and microphones. All of 5th class helped with the recording and listened to all of the students singing the music. We also had to wear headphones, work the computer, video the classes, and write notes on how the classes sang.

All the children in N.E.T.N.S. are on the CD and you will be able to purchase this wonderful CD featuring your child/ren from N.E.T.N.S Music Makers (aka 5th class) in the coming weeks.

A huge thank you to Georgia and Conor from the Kids2live charity who paid a visit to our school today to chat with the Student Council. They told us all about the charity which they and others have set up in Kenya to help orphans. 4 Kids 2 Live is a not for profit charity that was established to combat poverty and advance education for orphaned children in Kenya.. 4 Kids 2 Live works directly with the local communities to develop sustainable projects that will have a long-term positive impact on the lives of the local people. We were fascinated by their story and photos and we will share these with our classes in the coming days.
