This week in Michael’s class, we watched the season change from Winter into Spring. It happened almost overnight! But even though it was still very cold, we discovered that the first snowdrops have arrived and some of us have already seen the first new lambs. We have each started our very own Spring book and we are writing a little into it every day. When our books are finished, we will bring them home.

In Maths we have been making pictograms about our favourite things; pets, fruits and colours. These pictures help us to understand the way that numbers work in everyday life!

We made animals with spotty patterns using paint and bubblewrap today! It was fun and we were able to pop the bubbles when we were finished. We talked about the food pyramid and healthy eating this week and we learned a lot of new words about Bia (Food) as Gaeilge. We also learned a new poem about food called Ag Ithe agus ag Ól:

Ólaim bainne, ólaim tae,

ólaim cócó, i lár an lae!

Ithim prataí, ithim ubh,

Ithim arán, le him agus subh!

For centuries, drawings and paintings were simply an attempt to accurately capture and record a scene. They were thought of in much the same way we think about photographs today. In the second half of the 19th century, the industrial revolution changed society and this was reflected in dramatic changes that visual arts went through. New art styles and movements appeared and disappeared quickly- this was a reflection of the rapid changes in society. Art in this period is known as Modern Art. The Sixth class project group have been busy researching some of the major Art movements from this time (Impressionism, Fauvism, Art Nouveau & Deco, Surrealism and Pop Art) and will present their projects to their class in the coming weeks.

This week in Michael’s class, we learned a lot about different kinds of animals, where they live and how we can help look after them. We read a story called Farmyard Hullabaloo and we enjoyed the rhymes and poems about the different animals. We can make our own rhyming words! We learned a poem as Gaeilge called Luchain Bheaga, about a big, grey cat who chased away some mice.
We celebrated the week of the Chinese New Year by learning all about the festival and we made large, colourful dragons as 2012 was the Year of the Dragon!
We talked about making decisions and that sometimes we can help a lot at home by making good choices about what we do and say.
We learned the See-Saw song and used musical instruments to make our own orchestra in Music and we enjoyed using silly songs in Maths which help us with our numbers!!

For the past two weeks in school we have been learning about Pompeii and the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79A.D. The town of Pompeii is located on the Italian island of Sicily. There are many facts about this eruption that people do not know…

	The eruption lasted 19hours
	It was an ash eruption and very little actual lava came out
	Mt. Vesuvius has erupted another 50times since 79A.D.
	The ash from the volcano spread as far as the African coastline
	It is 1281m high
	Mt. Vesuvius is 17000 years old
	Hundreds of people died from asphyxiation when the ash got stuck in their lungs
	Many others died by being entirely covered in ash and other volcanic material
	When archaeologists went to excavate the site in one house they found a loaf of bread in an oven that had been perfectly preserved since 79 A.D. This demonstrates the speed at which the volcano struck the town of Pompeii
	Pompeii was found originally by a man digging in a garden
	The city was covered in ash and volcanic material that was almost 7meters deep
	One of the survivors ‘Pliny’ wrote many poems about the Pompeian disaster
	There were two prisoners who were chained to a wall during the eruption and their bodies (and many others) were perfectly preserved in a casing of ash.
	It is believed that the volcano will erupt again within the next 2000 years
	There were many signs before the eruption, but sadly these were all ignored.

The story of Pompeii is one of the greatest we have studied so far and we really enjoyed learning all about it. We hope these interesting facts have caught your eye and you will want to learn more about it too!

This week in 5th class we have been finishing off the final drafts of our reports, we all chose one mode of transport, gathered information on it and wrote detailed and informative report about it.

Below is the report that Niamh wrote:

Dog Sled

A dog sled is a sled that dogs get tied to and the dogs pull the musher.

The sled is made of wood and uses a small bit of metal. The parts of the sled are called the driving bar, top rail, brush bow, runner, bed slats, stanchions and the handlebar.

What happens is you attach, usually six dogs, to a sled. You use it in snow, so the musher puts little shoes on the dog’s feet so they don’t get sore. Assembling a sled dog team involves picking leader dogs, point dogs, swing dogs and wheel dogs. The leader dogs are crucial, so mushers take particular care of them. It is also important to have powerful wheel dogs to pull the sled out of the snow. In dog sledding, Siberian Huskies or Alaskan Malamutes are the main types of dogs used because of their willpower to work.

It is great fun and I would recommend it!

The topic Greek Mythology is very wide ranging. There are so many gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines, monsters and demons that it is hard to keep track of them all! Over the past few weeks some of Fourth Class completed an in depth study of one Greek hero or God that interests them. They presented the projects to their classes before the Christmas holidays and today they had the opportunity to create a sculpture using clay to go along with their project. Seánie & Inez sculpted Poseidon, Greek god of the sea, earthquakes and springs, Aoife sculpted Aphrodite, goddess of love and Ella sculpted Athena, goddess of wisdom and war. Next week, we’re looking forward to putting the finishing touches to our works of Art!
