Tens and Units and Capacity in 1st Class!!

We have had a very exciting few days working on maths in 1st Class. We have been working on tens and units for the very first time!!

We borrowed some cubes and lollipop sticks from Junior and Senior Infants. We then took groups of cubes and lollipop sticks and split them into bundles of ten. The bundles of ten can go in a special box called the tens box. If the cubes/lollipop sticks do not make a bundle of ten , then they can’t go in the tens box. We then checked how many units were left over!!

Did you know that 16=1 ten and 6 units??!!

We also did some work on capacity using an egg cup, a cup, a bottle and a bucket. We estimated how much water would fit into particular items and then carried out the measuring!! It was lots of fun and we were nearly swimming at the top of the classroom with all the water by the end of the task!!

Check out the photos of us working hard as matamaticians!! Can you tell from the photos what maths activity we did on dress up day?!
